Health Savings Accounts
A Health Savings Account (HSA) is a tax-exempt account established exclusively for the purpose of paying or reimbursing qualified medical expenses incurred by you, your spouse or your dependents. This program allows for individual, and/or employer contributions to be excluded from taxable income.
Eligibility for such an account depends upon the following:
- Coverage under a high-deductible health plan (HDHP)
- No coverage under another health plan (exceptions apply)
- Not enrolled in Medicare.
- Not eligible to be claimed as a dependent.
Contributions to an HSA can be made by the individual, employer or both. However, the total contributions are limited annually in accordance with Federal guidelines.
