Health Savings Accounts
A Health Savings Account (HSA) is a tax-exempt account established exclusively for the purpose of paying or reimbursing qualified medical expenses incurred by your employees, their spouse, or their dependents. This program allows for employer contributions to be excluded from taxable income.
Employee eligibility for such an account depends upon the following:
- Coverage under a high-deductible health plan (HDHP)
- No coverage under another health plan (exceptions apply)
- Not enrolled in Medicare
- Not eligible to be claimed as a dependent
Contributions to an HSA can be made by the employee, employer or both. However, the total contributions are limited annually in accordance with Federal guidelines.
