Identity Theft: How to Protect Yourself
Identity theft and fraud can affect anyone. Taking precautionary steps is important:
- Keep your PINs to yourself. Do not write them down or share them with anyone.
- Check your mail regularly. If you suspect you are missing mail that contains personal account information, you could be a victim of identity theft.
- Monitor your finances closely. Review your accounts online, bank statements, credit card bills and other financial statements carefully to reveal any unauthorized activities.
- Only give your personal information to companies and individuals you know and trust. Take extra precaution to verify the identity of these companies and individuals.
- Review your credit report for any unauthorized accounts opened in your name at least once a year. (Go to HelpWithMyBank.gov and select ‘Credit Report’ under the ‘Other Topics’ section).
- Make sure to tear or shred any documents, receipts and mail that contain your personal information before you throw it away.
- Be cautious and suspicious of any request for your personal information by mail, phone or email. Take extra precaution to verify the identity of the individual or company. Should you receive such information requests from sources claiming to be us, please do not respond!
